Sports betting became legal in most US states between 2018 and 2024, and millions of people are placing their first bets in 2026. This guide covers everything you need to know — without the casino jargon.
The goal of sports betting is not to pick winners. It's to find bets where the odds offered are better than the true probability of the outcome. That difference is called "edge" — and without edge, no betting strategy works long term.
Understanding the Odds
American odds (the +/- format) tell you how much you profit on a $100 bet:
- +150 means: bet $100, profit $150 if you win. Underdog.
- -150 means: bet $150, profit $100 if you win. Favorite.
- +100 / Even money means: risk $100 to win $100. 50/50 in the book's eyes.
The sportsbook's cut is called the "vig" or "juice" — typically around 10%. This is why a coin flip bet is usually -110/-110 (not +100/+100). The vig is how sportsbooks profit regardless of outcome.
The Three Core Bet Types
1. Moneyline — Pick the Winner
Simplest bet. You pick which team wins outright. If your team wins, you win. Example: Patriots -165 vs. Jets +140. Bet $165 on Patriots to win $100, or bet $100 on Jets to win $140.
Best for: When you strongly believe in one team and don't need the margin of victory to matter.
2. Point Spread — Win by Enough (or Don't Lose by Too Much)
The sportsbook handicaps the favorite. Example: Patriots -7 means the Patriots must win by more than 7 points for a spread bet on them to cash. Jets +7 means you win if the Jets win outright OR lose by fewer than 7.
Best for: When you think the favorite will win but might not cover a big number, or when you like the underdog to keep it close.
3. Over/Under (Total) — Combined Score
Bet on whether the total points scored by both teams goes over or under a set number. Example: Over 44.5 cashes if the combined score is 45 or more.
Best for: When you have a strong read on game pace, weather (football), or tempo without knowing who wins.
Parlays — High Risk, High Reward
A parlay combines 2+ bets into one ticket. All legs must win for the parlay to cash. The payout is multiplied for each leg — a 4-team parlay can pay 10-to-1 or more. The catch: the actual probability of hitting all 4 is much lower than the payout suggests. Sportsbooks love parlay bettors because the house edge is higher.

Bankroll Management — The Most Important Skill
More bettors are ruined by bet sizing than by bad picks. The professional standard is called the Kelly Criterion — you bet a percentage of your bankroll proportional to your perceived edge. In practice, most sharp bettors use:
- 1-2% of bankroll per game for standard bets
- 2-3% maximum for high-confidence plays
- Never more than 5% on any single bet, regardless of confidence
Use our free Bankroll Calculator to set your bet sizes based on your starting bankroll and risk tolerance.
How Data-Driven Betting Works
Most recreational bettors use gut instinct and team loyalty. Sharp bettors use data. The edge comes from:
- Line shopping — comparing odds across multiple sportsbooks. A -3 at one book vs. -3.5 at another is a significant difference over time
- Market movement — when a line moves opposite to where public money is going, sharp money ("steam") is usually on the other side
- Situational angles — teams on second legs of back-to-backs, divisional revenge spots, schedule fatigue, and rest advantages all create predictable edges
- Algorithmic models — tools like AIBetGuru's Oracle system score each game across dozens of factors to find where the market is mispriced
Tracking Your Results
The single most important habit for any bettor is keeping detailed records. Track every bet: sport, matchup, line, bet type, result, and profit/loss. This lets you identify which bet types and sports you actually have an edge in — and which you don't. Use our free Bet Tracker to log your bets and track your ROI automatically.
